Man gets 25 years in Sparta trucker’s murder

SKOKIE, Ill. — The Racine, Wis., man convicted of fatally stabbing a Sparta trucker when the two pulled their trucks over to fight on the Edens Expressway will serve 25 years in prison.

David Seddon, 49, was sentenced Thursday in Cook County District Court after defense attorney Tim Grace unsuccessfully tried to convince Judge Larry Axelrood he had made a mistake in convicting Seddon of first-degree intentional homicide, for killing Alan Lauritzen, 40, on Jan. 15.

Grace said his client should have been convicted of second-degree murder because Seddon believed he was acting in self defense. The judge disagreed.

Lauritzen’s family pleaded with the judge for a harsh sentence, saying Seddon should never be allowed to “see the light of day.”

“I know this judge is a fair judge,” said Lauritzen’s wife, Lauren. “I don’t want him to be a fair judge.”

She said Seddon showed no remorse for killing her husband.

“He has taken my best friend, my soul mate,” she said. “I watch as my children try to figure out life when their mentor has been ripped from their grasp.”

Assistant State’s Attorney Catherine Crowley read statements from the Lauritzen children, Britani, 16, and Alexander, 18.

“I wish heaven had a phone so I could hear your voice,” Britani wrote.

Alexander wrote he wants to help his family the way his father helped them, but he struggles.

“I can’t sleep, I can’t think right,” he wrote.

Seddon apologized for what he did. “It was stupid human pride, trying to save face when somebody challenges you and pulls over to the side of the road,” he said.
