Questions From a Driver About Sleep Apnea

I am looking for information about the new sleep apnea test that I keep hearing is going to be part of the biannual driver physical. This is what I have heard but I don’t know whats true and whats trucker talk.
1) If you weigh over a certain amount you must take a sleep study.

2) Your company does not pay for it

3) …Health insurance wont pay for it

4) It costs $3000 for the one day test.

You can send him to this page of our CSA drivers handbook, a related piece about health regulations. None of the stuff he mentions is in any way actual law, though different carriers may have different policies toward sleep apnea: http://www.digitalmagazinetechnology.com/a/csahandbook#page=37

National Transportation Safety Board has recommended screening and testing be a part of physical; as of now, there is already a question on physical forms examiners must fill out relating to sleep apnea, but the threshold for testing is entirely up to the examiner’s judgment on whether the person having the physical is capable of operating a CMV or poses a crash risk. Yes, some want to change that, but whether the kinds of things the commenter is talking about will become regulations or not is definitely still undecided. -Todd

Thank you very much Todd! I passed the information a long to him and he said he appreciates it a lot. Do you mind if I post it on my blog as well? And give you credit.

Sure. My response above doesn’t take into account the full range of recommendations DOT/FMCSA have received on this, though, be aware. Their Medical Review Board recommend much the same, too. I.e. it hasn’t just been coming from the National Transportation Safety Board. -TD

Please look at the web site listed for information.

You asked about your height and weight forcing you into a sleep study. Yes that is true but it is based on a relationship between height and weight.

Currently there is no regulations on the subject, however, there is a lot of confusing recommendation.

In most cases it is best if you get this taken care of before you go for your Physical. And there is home tests that can be done that will get you tested and treated for $1500.00

If you have more questions call the information line on the web site
