HOUSTON – An armored truck guard was shot during a robbery outside a Southeast Houston Kroger Wednesday morning.

Police have confirmed the guard was shot multiple times during the robbery. He was in critical condition at Ben Taub Hospital at last check.

Police said the guard returned fire, but it’s not clear if either suspect was hit.

The two armed suspects got away with a bag of cash and the guard’s gun. Police were still searching for them hours after the noon robbery.

A second guard in the truck drove away, as they are trained to do. He returned to the scene shortly after the shooting.

The shootout happened near the Kroger in the 6300 block of Telephone Road near Bellfort.

Store managers used the intercom to alert shoppers.

“They called, ‘Code blue, somebody was robbed and shot,'” said shopper Keith Mallard.

Shoppers ran to the back of the store to take cover.

“Oh my God, a robbery,” thought Elizabeth Russell. “I’m alive. Thank God.”

“We take the safety of our customers and associates very seriously,” Kroger officials said in a written statement. “Our staff is diligently working with the Houston Police Department regarding the investigation.”

Police found the suspects’ getaway car behind the store. It had been burned. They apparently escaped in another vehicle.

Police aren’t sure if the same suspects were involved in another armored car robbery two weeks ago. It happened blocks away at the Gulf Freeway and Monroe. The two robbers got away in that case, as well.
